Airline employee files criminal raps against Filipino lawmaker
Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) – Philippine Airlines (PAL) employee Sarah Teresa B. Ocampo has filed criminal and administrative complaints against Filipinop party-list representative Eulogio Magsaysay before the Office of the Ombudsman and the House of Representatives ethics committee.

The case stemmed from an incident on December 17 last year at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport when Magsaysay, who represents the Alliance of Volunteer Educators, allegedly berated Ocampo, a PAL customer service agent.

Ocampo told the Office of the Special Prosecutor, which is under the Ombudsman, that Magsaysay was “verbally abusive” to her when she told him that it was not in her power to accommodate his request to be seated in the same row with his family at the business class section of the plane.

She said the congressman yelled at her, telling her to “shut up, you menopausal bitch!” He called her “bitch” four times, Ocampo said.

She said Magsaysay threatened to have her fired and that he would bring the matter to a “hearing” in Congress.

Ocampo asked the Ombudsman to secure the report of the airport security and the closed-circuit television recording of the incident.

Hours later, Ocampo formally accused Magsaysay before the ethics committee of grave slander, serious misconduct, conduct unbecoming of a high ranking public official and direct solicitation of personal favor or gain using his office.

She was accompanied by members of the PAL Employees Association (PALEA).

Apologies

In an interview with the Inquirer, Magsaysay said he would go out of his way to personally convey his apology to Ocampo and to PALEA, which helped the employee bring the two cases against him.

“That’s her right,” Magsaysay said of the filing of the case. “I have addressed this issue already and I’ve apologized several times to the media and in public.”

Told that he had not personally apologized to Ocampo, Magsaysay quipped, “I understand that they’re not accepting my apology. Nonetheless, I am willing to do, just say when and where. I’ll try to get in touch with Ocampo and I will write PALEA today to express my sincere apologies.”

Asked what took him so long to personally apologize, he said he did not know where to find Ocampo or how to reach PALEA.

Blaze trail

“We wish that Sarah’s fight for justice will blaze a trail in the struggle for workers’ dignity. Service workers in the airline industry and call centers among others suffer indignities in the workplace through no fault of their own but receive no protection from their employers or the government,” said Ginalyn Licayan, head of the PALEA women’s committee.

Licayan said there were many more Sarahs who need support and protection against abusive officials and insensitive customers.

The labor group Partido ng Manggagawa (PM) declared its support for Ocampo and a PM contingent joined PALEA members yesterday.

“Sarah’s fight is the fight of all working women. We call on women workers and women advocates to stand up in support of Sarah against sexism and for dignity,” PM secretary general Judy Ann Miranda said.

Miranda also questioned Magsaysay’s credentials as a party-list representative for educators.

“Magsaysay’s abusive behavior toward a woman employee exposes his pretensions as a representative of the marginalized. What underrepresented sector exactly does Magsaysay’s Alliance of Voluntary Educators speak for?” Miranda said.

“It appears that Magsaysay as an advocate of the marginalized is as fictional as Mikey Arroyo (son of former president Gloria Arroyo) being a representative of tricycle drivers,” she added.

Rumors of Facebook shutting down leaves users panicking, looking for other social networking options

Rumors of an impending Facebook shutdown had the site’s millions of users in a panic Saturday as they wondered who would take their number one procrastination tool away.

The Internet rumor was sparked by a report from the “Weekly World News,” a website which also includes a story insisting “Alien spaceships to attack Earth in 2011″ and another titled “Mike Tyson Pigeon Fetish.”

According to their Facebook “story,” the super popular social media website would be shut down in March because Mark Zuckerberg was getting too stressed out.

“Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life,” the newspaper quoted Zuckerberg as saying at an alleged press conference in California on Saturday.

The questionable story apparently sent Facebook users into a panic. The phrase “is facebook shutting down” was the 14th most searched for on Google Saturday and the 10th most as of Sunday morning.

On Facebook itself, groups like “Against shutting down Facebook on 15th of March” popped up with the slogan “No Facebook, No Party”. On Twitter, users fretted about what would happen to their pictures – not to mention social lives.

“If Facebook shutdown Im not going to remember nobody birthday (sic),” one Twitter user wrote.

Others started making alternate plans, saying they would move their information to MySpace, Twitter or a new service, like the one Google is rumored to be working on.

On Sunday night, Facebook aimed to put a rest to the rumors and tweeted, “We didn’t get the memo about shutting down, so we’ll keep working away. We aren’t going anywhere; we’re just getting started.”

But the rapidly spreading rumor had many others ridiculing people’s addiction to the social networking site that is used for everything from posting pictures, party invites and showing off how many friends that people have (even if they’re just on the ‘Book).

“The number of Facebook users believing it will shutdown proves how badly it needs to be shutdown,” Twitter user Ramezm quipped.

No matter the parody report, Facebook is set to most likely release its public finances to possibly become a public company later this year. A few weeks ago, a team at Goldman Sachs valued the Harvard tech-startup at around $50 billion.

If it as valued for that at an IPO offering, it would be the largest start-up tech offering in history.

Giant sinkhole shocks neighborhood in Guatemala City
(CNN) — Residents of a center-city neighborhood in Guatemala City, Guatemala, are still in shock after a massive sinkhole opened last weekend, gobbling several buildings and nearly an entire intersection, according to local officials.

Over the weekend, the nearly perfect spherical crater developed and consumed whatever was on its surface, including structures and utility lines. There were no reports of deaths related to the sinkhole.

The sinkhole’s destruction added to the tragic events in Central America related to Tropical Storm Agatha, which left a death toll of more than 175 people in the region that includes Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

The 20-meter (about 66 feet) diameter sinkhole is about 30 meters (about 100 feet) deep.

Guatemala City’s human rights ombudsman, Sergio Morales, confirmed reports that since 2005, residents in the area had complained of rumblings, fissures and sinking terrain.

“Yes, we can attest that they have been complaining since 2005 and we are looking into the initial complaints, ” said Morales.

“We are looking into the original response by municipal authorities,” he said.

In an interview with the newspaper Prensa Libre, neighborhood association president Augusto Lopez Rincon said he believed that excessive traffic caused by commercial trucks was to blame for the sinkhole.

There are unconfirmed reports that the street’s infrastructure was weakened by the storms, officials said. David Monterroso, geology director of Guatemala’s Disaster Relief Agency, told Prensa Libre there should be an in-depth analysis of the soil consistency to determine how many houses near the sinkhole are still in danger of collapsing.

He said according to preliminary studies, the bottom of the sinkhole is irregular and that sewers and water lines may have contributed to the sinkhole’s formation.

The size and shape of the crater led some of the more than 1,000 readers posting comments on the story on CNN.com to debate how it could have formed and whether it was even real.

“The picture looks unreal, ‘Photoshoped’ but it may just look that strange,” OhioInd posted.

Edhead76 replied: “Believe me this picture is no fake. Guatemala has a very odd terrain. They have a lot of mountainous regions and the capital is somewhat level, but artificially. they have mudslides all the time.”

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds or rocks that can naturally be dissolved by ground water circulating through them.

One local resident believes ground water has something to do with the sinkhole.

“It sounds like there’s a river down there,” said business owner Armando Gomez. “I don’t think that the earth gave way and that was that. There’s something else that caused it.”

USGS studies show that new sinkholes have emerged recently as a result of land-use practices such as ground-water pumping, and from construction and development practices.

In 2007, another sinkhole claimed three lives in Barrio San Antonio in Guatemala City.
