Giant sinkhole shocks neighborhood in Guatemala City
(CNN) — Residents of a center-city neighborhood in Guatemala City, Guatemala, are still in shock after a massive sinkhole opened last weekend, gobbling several buildings and nearly an entire intersection, according to local officials.

Over the weekend, the nearly perfect spherical crater developed and consumed whatever was on its surface, including structures and utility lines. There were no reports of deaths related to the sinkhole.

The sinkhole’s destruction added to the tragic events in Central America related to Tropical Storm Agatha, which left a death toll of more than 175 people in the region that includes Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

The 20-meter (about 66 feet) diameter sinkhole is about 30 meters (about 100 feet) deep.

Guatemala City’s human rights ombudsman, Sergio Morales, confirmed reports that since 2005, residents in the area had complained of rumblings, fissures and sinking terrain.

“Yes, we can attest that they have been complaining since 2005 and we are looking into the initial complaints, ” said Morales.

“We are looking into the original response by municipal authorities,” he said.

In an interview with the newspaper Prensa Libre, neighborhood association president Augusto Lopez Rincon said he believed that excessive traffic caused by commercial trucks was to blame for the sinkhole.

There are unconfirmed reports that the street’s infrastructure was weakened by the storms, officials said. David Monterroso, geology director of Guatemala’s Disaster Relief Agency, told Prensa Libre there should be an in-depth analysis of the soil consistency to determine how many houses near the sinkhole are still in danger of collapsing.

He said according to preliminary studies, the bottom of the sinkhole is irregular and that sewers and water lines may have contributed to the sinkhole’s formation.

The size and shape of the crater led some of the more than 1,000 readers posting comments on the story on CNN.com to debate how it could have formed and whether it was even real.

“The picture looks unreal, ‘Photoshoped’ but it may just look that strange,” OhioInd posted.

Edhead76 replied: “Believe me this picture is no fake. Guatemala has a very odd terrain. They have a lot of mountainous regions and the capital is somewhat level, but artificially. they have mudslides all the time.”

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds or rocks that can naturally be dissolved by ground water circulating through them.

One local resident believes ground water has something to do with the sinkhole.

“It sounds like there’s a river down there,” said business owner Armando Gomez. “I don’t think that the earth gave way and that was that. There’s something else that caused it.”

USGS studies show that new sinkholes have emerged recently as a result of land-use practices such as ground-water pumping, and from construction and development practices.

In 2007, another sinkhole claimed three lives in Barrio San Antonio in Guatemala City.

JANUARY

sleep issues. i’ve been having less and less sleep every single day the past few months. march was another leap as i managed to give priority to a thing i value most, sleep. on that note, i have required myself to wake up early and be on time for work every single day. i got a Perfect Attendance for this month in my company, something i didn’t expect. but issues with my regularization as an employee with this company i am working with came along. thought i didn’t deserve another contract.

APRIL
Holy week. a trip with good friends to Sagada. nth travel to VIGAN. a week long vacation with my family. a month like no other. April was a blast. ’nuff said.

MAY
the heartbreaker. the offer. the contract. a former flame came back to recover a friendship lost. tried to bring back things like they used to but realized in the end that drinking from a broken goblet glass will just puncture your lips more. i got an offer from a boss overseas.. thought of it a million times but decided to just stay with the current. got a new contract with this company.

JUNE

JULY
you start to fancy this person. then a blockade starts to build before your very eyes. there’s nothing you can do but watch it build up. there’s nothing you can do but be left behind. i remembering playing “Wall in your heart” because it fits what the heart tells me. july is the month when i created my twitter account.

AUGUST
travel month. First time in Quezon. Second time in Palawan. a post birthday celebration

SEPTEMBER
birthday month. a month of grieving. just when the celebration heats up. a bad news came in. the passing of a mom who loved her son’s so dearly. it was the saddest day of my life. with her untimely death, i came to know her more based on stories from people i rarely talk to. moving on was hard. finances got screwed.

OCTOBER
travel going home was almost weekly. henyetah worked double time. a moving on month. a much deserved out of the country trip was canceled because of financial and scheduling problems. October like no other. a renewed friendship with the heart-breaker.

NOVEMBER
the first All Saints Day for my mom. life is now normal.

DECEMBER
last month. nothing new really. will be celebrating Christmas eve with friends. New years with family.

From an annoying jologs icon to a disturbing tropical storm, Jolina is now making waves (pun intended) in Luzon and in the rest of the country especially in Mega Manila where TV is available. Jolina (the tropical storm) will bring occasional to frequent rains over Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao particularly over the western sections which may trigger flashfloods and landslides, while Jolina the lousy celebrity will bring nausea and daze nationwide with her very bizzare taste in fashion not to mention her freaky, rarely cute gestures on tv.

Pagasa warned against possible storm related accidents in some areas in the country so please avoid her TV shows at all costs. Better yet, do not turn on your TV. Avoid her face if possible.

At least 22 areas were placed under storm signals 1 and 2 PAGASA reported.

Jolina is expected to leave the country by Monday and move toward Taiwan to meet her love team Marvin Agustin, another showoff celebrity.
