Filipino medics protest alleged racial slur in US TV show
By Beverly T. Natividad

MANILA — Filipino doctors are not desperate.

This is the message that local doctors and the local health sector are sending to the producers of the hit show “Desperate Housewives” for the alleged racial slur it committed by questioning the quality of Philippine medical schools.

In view of the alleged slur, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III is writing the producers of “Desperate Housewives” to demand an apology for the racial comments and to register the country’s “vehement protest.”

“I believe that the comments were made on the show ‘Desperate Housewives’. I wanted to let them know that Filipino doctors are not desperate,” Duque said in an interview.

The Philippine Medical Association (PMA), for its part, is set to raise the issue to the United States Federal Communications Commission (US FCC) and the World Medical Association to ask for a rectification on what it considers “demeaning” comments.

Dr. Bu Castro, PMA spokesperson, said in an interview that the association decided after a meeting Wednesday that on top of a complaint to the television network which aired the show and the show’s producers, they will also bring the matter to government regulators.

“The comments were totally outrageous. We are sending a complaint to the US FCC, the World Medical Association, and to the TV network and producers of the show to ask that the same be rectified because it is demeaning to the character and dignity of Filipino doctors,” said Castro.

The US FCC, which was established by the Communications Act of 1934, is an independent government agency charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable.

The local medical sector is in fact puzzled by the insult since there has been no recent events which would have put in question the competence of Filipino doctors abroad.

If anything, Duque said, Filipino doctors are held in high esteem overseas.

Duque added that a number of Filipino doctors have, in fact, become professors in ivy league medical schools in the United States. This, he said, points to the competence and the ability of Filipino doctors to manage diseases since they have trained in these top US schools and passed all its exams.

Asked whether they think the controversial leak on the 2006 Nursing Board exams could have contributed to the impression of Filipino doctors on the TV show, Castro said while this is probable, the issue on Filipino nurses should be separate from that of the doctors.

Castro said they were also wondering why any American would suddenly question the competence of Philippine medical schools when many of them now opt to study medicine here in the country. By making the racial comments, he said, they are also hitting on fellow American citizens.

“Many American doctors have graduated here. Maybe it is good to ask them why they decided to study here?” said Castro.

Castro said the Philippine medical board exams have proven to be one of the most difficult medical exams in the world. He said, the medical test questions here are regularly assessed by international quality testing programs which validate the questions.

He said, the medical board exams in the Philippines are not only found to be within international standards but are also one of the most difficult.
